The Audio, Video, Photo and Immersive Journalism track:

  • Under the Hood: Broadcast Teams Tackling Digital Content

Our “Under the Hood” series will begin with lightning talks to introduce our experts, followed by intimate talks to dig into tough subjects. You’ll have the chance to sit down with Alisha Ebrahimji of WFAA-TV, who will discuss what tools can help you get the most eyeballs on your story, as well as what was unsuccessful in the past. Or maybe you’d rather join Kelly Frank and Stephanie Slagle of WBNS 10-TV and talk about how to bring a legacy TV station into the modern age. You could also hear Misty Montano and Kevin Vaughan break down 9News Denver’s “BLAME” project and why there’s still a place for longform broadcast storytelling. Finally, CBC Toronto’s Marie Caloz and Pras Rajagopalan will dissect how to transform a broadcast newsroom’s culture to be digital first in under a year. It’s a broadcast braintrust and there’ll be some great ideas being shared in this room.

  • Journalism 360: Creating Immersive Content on a Shoestring Budget

You don’t have to have an incredible amount of funding to create immersive stories. This session will introduce the tools you need to start creating content, what kinds of stories lend themselves well to the medium and how to make it work in a busy newsroom.

  • Podcast Search Party: Casting for New Listeners

Getting your podcast out to listeners may well be the biggest challenge creators face. But don’t worry, we have a dynamite session lined up featuring Dan Franks, Director of Live Events at Midroll and Founder of Podcast Movement; Caitlin Thompson, US Director of Content at Acast and comedian and television presenter Steele Saunders, host and producer of Steele Wars Podcast & I Love Green Guide Letters Podcast. Moderating is Senior Digital Editor at Federal News Radio Michael O’Connell. The group will take you through a variety of seriously creative tips and tools for getting the word out about your podcast.

  • Table Talks: Audio, Video, Photo + Immersive

Our Table Talks are lively, inspiring discussions where you can break down some of the most complex subjects with the best minds in the industry. Consistently considered one of our most popular events, this two-hour intimate discussion is an opportunity to talk about challenges you’ve faced related to broadcast and multimedia journalism and the strategies you’ve employed to solve them. No preparation is necessary — this is an interactive event and we encourage everyone interested to participate. Note: Topics will be announced closer to the conference and we are not taking questions for speakers in advance, since these are participatory conversations.

  • Local Podcasting: Best Practices and New Opportunities for Small Teams

Podcasts can bring in new audiences and showcase stories in a new way. But how do you develop a podcast when you’re a small shop? Our experts have been there, done that, and will give you all the need-to-know information to get started and be successful. Maureen McMurray of New Hampshire Public Radio and Tamar Charney of NPR will discuss while Nicholas Quah of Hot Pod Media moderates.

  • Dos and Don’ts for Facebook Live

If Facebook Live is still uncharted territory for you, you won’t want to miss this session with Geoffrey Dietrich of AJ+ and Brodie Fenlon of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. They’ll tell you what to do before, during, and after your Facebook Live, and even share a few hilarious examples of when things didn’t quite go as planned.
