Making the case for reader support

Suggested Speakers

Learn how nonprofits and media organizations can make a compelling case for reader-supported journalism

Session Description

“After an election year like no other, and with a president who has declared an all-out war on the media, those hungry for fact-based reporting are flocking to engage with journalism in new ways, including providing financial support.

In Summer 2016, Mother Jones began a new appeal to its readers for funding expository investigative journalism. By revealing what it takes to produce such valuable stories, readers responded by supporting the nonprofit newsroom, with many signing up to make sustaining donations. Then the “”Trump Bump”” happened, but reader support was already pointing in the right direction for Mother Jones before the election. Hear Mother Jones’ CEO Monika Bauerlein and director of marketing and membership Brian Hiatt explain how other nonprofits and media organizations can make a compelling case for reader-supported journalism.”
