How is global journalism using news tech? What & where are the gaps in access? We'll reveal our #techsurvey results at #ONA2017: [LINK]

Session Description

How are journalists and newsrooms around the world embracing the digital revolution? What are the major gaps in journalists’ use of and access to technology across the developing and developed world? And are there any universal best practices on tech-driven journalism that we can adopt as a global media community?

These are some of the questions that our distinguished and diverse panel of experts will address in a panel discussion of ICFJ’s groundbreaking State of Technology in Global Newsrooms report.

The report, to be released in September, will summarize the findings of a comprehensive survey of newsrooms and journalists globally. ICFJ launched this study in 12 languages to address a crucial gap in the conversation on technology disruption in newsrooms: what technologies are being used, where, and how? By surveying media professionals, the study will provide practical data on new global and regional trends, raise new questions, and identify new opportunities in tech-driven journalism.

Our suggested panelists are on the advisory committee of our global study. They reflect the spectrum of stakeholders in today’s media landscape – journalists, social media experts, and technology and data specialists. Representing the United States, Kenya, and India, the panelists will also speak to the local and regional media transformation.

The panel will be moderated by ICFJ Senior Vice President Sharon Moshavi, who will lead a participatory and open discussion.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

We made this survey global, in 12 languages, because we recognize that while technology disruption in newsrooms has been widely chronicled, much of the discussion and research is focused on the Western and developed world. This not only excludes diverse voices from the global south, but also means that we are missing the bigger picture when we talk about the impact of technology on news media. Our panel will contribute to the conference’s diversity in the following ways: -The panel will explore topics related to diversity, such as the role of women in tech-driven journalism, what the digital divide means to media professionals from different regions, and how technology is used to engage new communities. -It will reflect the diverse viewpoints of experts from a wide geographic scope. The panelists are professionals who come from and work in different regions. They will use their personal experiences in the field to explore practical ways they can apply lessons learned in their respective regions. -It will include multidisciplinary perspectives. Our panelists are specialists in different fields – news media, technology, data, and social media. They will bring their unique viewpoints and expertise to the discussion to highlight the growing overlap between these different disciplines, the opportunities and challenges of collaboration, and what it means for journalists today.

What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
