Ground Support: Growing digital journalism in developing countries using new technologies

Suggested Speakers

Exploring ways that new and free technologies can support local journalism and newsrooms in developing countries.

Session Description

Quartz is currently working on a proposal to bring our free chartbuilding tool, Atlas, to newsrooms in a handful of African countries. The purpose of the project is two-fold: to provide access to an easy-to-use data visualization tool which will help local journalists illustrate their stories, and to create a database of those visualizations for people inside and outisde of Africa to use. This panel could feature a few other projects with similar aims, projects that seek to train journalists on an easily accessible, free-to-use technology that they can use to make their digital journalism stand out and reach more people. Panelists could discuss the challenges, pitfalls, and rewards of disseminating these technologies, and provide advice to people looking to do similar projects.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

The panel would focus on international projects that support local digital journalism using a variety of interesting technologies. It would explore the unique challenges faced by journalists in countries outside of the US that may not have the same access to data, technology, and tools that most conference participants have. It would also help to create awareness of different databases and sources outside of those most commonly used.
