Stuck in a job rut? Learn negotiation tips to hack your digital journalism career and break free from the #glassceiling #corporateladder
Session Description
Working with the ONA team, the presenters will develop an interactive session to empower journalists at all stages of their careers with tools to evaluate their professional goals and negotiate to mutually beneficial workplace relationships.
There’s been a paradigm shift in career paths for digital journalists. As entry-level jobs have evolved from “researchers” and “editorial assistants” to “producers” and “social editors,” legacy media companies haven’t established a consistent ladder for growth. At the same time, technology is making it easier for journalists to create their own unconventional path. Women, who may feel alienated in workplaces that have spent decades catering to men, recognize there are now other legitimate options, but often don’t know where to start.
We want to showcase how thinking outside of the box can pay off when it comes to personal fulfillment—whether you’re working at a D.C. corporation or your home office in New Orleans.
Participants will learn from one another and develop key strategies for career negotiation that are effective for women—helping them avoid the gender bias that can hold women back. While geared toward women, the session will be useful for men as well.
Part strategy session, part group therapy, participants will reflect about their professional goals and develop strategies to achieve them within a changing media landscape.
