Job rotations, skills training, a metered wall... Find out what's inside the digital reinvention of the Philadelphia Inquirer @ONAConf

Session Description

Last year The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com were donated to the non-profit Lenfest Institute for Journalism, now the largest organization of its kind dedicated to supporting sustainable business models for local journalism. Philly embarked on an aggressive plan to transform and thrive in the digital age, a plan that includes reimagining workflows, training for digital skills, job reassignments, redefining brands, connecting with online audiences through social media, new mobile products, and a metered paywall. Philly is a test lab for the Lenfest Institute and its transformation a closely watched undertaking, representing a blueprint for preserving local journalism everywhere.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

With this panel, led by a man and a woman panelists, we explore the experience of what is still a print-centric newsroom to reinvent itself for the digital age. We will touch upon issues of cultural resistance, unions, hiring and training a more diverse staff, and more.

What will your audience have gained by the time your session is over?
