Session Description
Also have two other speakers, one definite, one likely: Patti Epler, editor of “Civil Beat” (owned by Pierre Omidyar–First Look Media, Intercept etc.)in Honolulu. Mark Schoofs, projects and investigations editor, Buzzfeed. Investigative reporting has been a popular addition to online news organizations for the last five years or so. Now, with the Trump administration gleefully declaring war with the media, investigative reporting is more vital than ever.
How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?
Three of the four proposed panelists are women. Maggie Leung is Chinese. The unstated message this sends is that women and minorities are running and can run vital investigative units, which until recently had largely been a domain occupied mostly by men. In Maggie's case, she is the head of all Content (news) for a newsroom of now more than 100 journalists across the country. She built an investigative team from scratch over the last eight months, hiring two Pulitzer Prize winners and two other distinguished journalists.
