Learn about photogrammetry & volumetric video capture for journalism, & how to get the best of both interactive VR & 360 video in 1 package

Session Description

Photogrammetry and volumetric video capture have long been highly specialized VR techniques to recreate a photorealistic rendition of the world in VR without the limitations of 360 video, by allowing user movement and potential interactivity.

These tools are about to become more readily accessible thanks to the development of mobile volumetric capture through initiatives like Google’s Project Tango, and the increase in studios offering these services.

Ben and Kevin are both highly engaging speakers who have lots of experience in the field and speaking at industry events and journalism conferences.

Kevin and the Emblematic team just premiered their latest experience: Solitary Confinement, which won the Jury Award at SxSW, and illustrates the perfect combination between photogrammetry and volumetric technology.

We’ll make sure to strike the right balance between bringing technical information and keeping things simple for journalists who aren’t yet familiar immersive journalism.

How does your submission contribute to the diversity of the conference?

We’ve seen the rise and hype of 360 video but this will push the discussion further and provide new tools for journalists and news organizations to tell the story in a more realistic and powerful way. The panel is comprised only of individuals who have worked directly with the medium and can share their knowledge. Ben was the first fellow responsible for innovation at Buzzfeed. Kevin is a distinguished speaker and industry leader from a minority (as well as Ivana Coleman from Emblematic if Kevin isn’t available). I’m French-American and of Asian descent.
